What is a Corrugated Box?

Corrugated boxes are one of the most popular forms of packaging and also one of the most environmentally friendly.  Corrugated board is a paper based material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet sandwiched between two flat linerboards.  This structure makes corrugated board very strong and rigid but at the same time able to absorb and withstand shock.  The air circulating between the linerboards also acts as an insulator.

There are different sizes of flute available, ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘E’ and ‘F’ or microflute. The letter designation refers to the order in which the flutes were invented. The most common flute being the ‘C’ flute.

Corrugated board which consists of a linerboard, flute and a further linerboard is referred to as singlewall.  By adding another flue and liner board you create doublewall.  Repeating the process you create tripple wall.

Linerboards can be manufactured from virgin material, known as kraft material or recycled material (known as test)  The type and weight of the material gives rise to an endless combination of different grade of corrugated boxes that can be manufactured.

There are also numerous styles of box.  Box styles are defined by a 4-digit code specified by FEFCO, for example a regular slotted container is coded 0201.

Being made from paper corrugated board comes from a natural and renewable resource and many of the paper producers are committed to sustainably managed forests.  Discarded corrugated board can be put back into the manufacturing process to manufacture new board and FEFCO estimate that 84% of corrugated packaging is recycled.
